Discover more about Shawnee National Forest

Shawnee National Forest, nestled between the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers in Southern Illinois, encompasses 289,000 acres of diverse landscapes. Unlike the flatlands that characterize much of Illinois, the Shawnee boasts oak-hickory forests, wetlands, open grasslands, lush canyons, and dramatic bluffs. This varied terrain offers a wealth of recreational opportunities and scenic beauty. The forest's history reflects both human impact and conservation efforts. Originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Shawnee, the land was later cleared for agriculture and industry by European settlers. Decades of poor soil management led to unproductive land. In the 1930s, the federal government began acquiring exhausted farmland, and in 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared these purchase units to be the Shawnee National Forest. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) played a vital role in reforesting the area, planting pine trees to prevent erosion and rebuild the soil.Today, the Shawnee National Forest is a popular destination for outdoor recreation. Hiking is a major draw, with trails like the Garden of the Gods Observation Trail, Rim Rock Trail, and Little Grand Canyon offering stunning views and unique geological formations. Visitors can also enjoy camping, fishing, boating, horseback riding, and birdwatching. The forest includes seven Congressionally-designated Wilderness Areas, providing critical habitat for native plant and animal species. Popular spots include Garden of the Gods, Burden Falls, Bell Smith Springs, and Little Grand Canyon.
