Discover more about Buffalo Rock State Park

Buffalo Rock State Park, located approximately three miles west of Ottawa in LaSalle County, Illinois, is a 298-acre park with a rich history and diverse attractions. Once an island in the Illinois River, the bluff now offers sweeping views of the Illinois River. The area has been inhabited since 1673 by the Illinois Indians. Later, it served as a French military, trading, and missionary post. In the winter of 1682-1683, explorers LaSalle and Tonty gathered 4,000 Indian warriors at Buffalo Rock to form a confederation against the Iroquois. The Crane Company of Chicago owned Buffalo Rock in 1912, using it as a sanatorium and recreational area for its employees, before donating the land to the state in 1927.Today, visitors can explore the park's two main trails: the River Bluff Trail, which offers panoramic views of the Illinois River from observation decks, and the Woodland Trail, which winds through the park's wooded areas. A highlight of the park is the Effigy Tumuli, five large earth sculptures representing animals native to the Illinois River. These sculptures, including a 2,070-foot-long snake, a 140-foot-long frog, and a 770-foot-long catfish, provide a unique art experience. Buffalo Rock is also home to American bison, which can be viewed in a grazing area near the park's play area. The park provides picnic areas with tables and cooking grills, making it a favorite spot for family outings. Primitive camping is available along the trail between Buffalo Rock and Utica, with fire rings provided.
