Nestled along the Kishwaukee and Rock Rivers, Indian Hill Manor, currently known as Esta Barrett Manor & Gardens, is a captivating historical landmark in Rockford, Illinois. The estate, originally built in 1916-1918 for Charles C. and Esta Barrett, served as a rural retreat from their busy city life. Charles was a Chicago businessman, and Esta, an actress and socialite. The Colonial Revival manor house and coach house were designed by Rockford architect Charles W. Bradley, incorporating Craftsman elements. Key features include the rectangular massing, double-hung windows, and classically styled entrance, along with a low hip roof and exposed ceiling beams. The landscape was designed by O.C. Simonds in the naturalistic style. Today, visitors can explore the manor's grounds and gardens, and learn about the history of the estate and the Barrett family. The property also includes a historic farm and the Indian Hill Forest Preserve, which was donated to the Forest Preserves of Winnebago County. The manor is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
