Discover more about James R. Thompson Center

The James R. Thompson Center, located at 100 W Randolph Street in Chicago, is a prominent example of postmodern architecture. Designed by Helmut Jahn and opened in 1985, the building was initially known as the State of Illinois Center before being renamed in honor of former Illinois Governor James R. Thompson in 1993. The building was commissioned in 1978 by Thompson to create a landmark building in the heart of Chicago to represent the state of Illinois. The Thompson Center's design is intended to represent the "centrality of government". Its architecture includes a rounded facade and a large circular skylit atrium. The 17-story building covers an entire city block, with a curved southeast side. The facade was originally made of 24,600 glass panes. The building also includes nineteen specially commissioned artworks funded by the State of Illinois Art-in-Architecture Program. Throughout its history, the Thompson Center has housed various Illinois state government offices, as well as businesses and art galleries. In 2022, Alphabet Inc. (Google's parent company) acquired the building and began renovations in 2024. The renovations are expected to be completed in 2026, with hopes that some portion of the building will be open to the public.
