    The Van O Homestead is located at 444 E 157th Pl, South Holland, IL 60473. From I-94 (Bishop Ford Freeway), exit at 159th Street and head east. Turn left onto South Park Avenue, then right onto 157th Place. The Homestead will be on your right. Parking is available on the street. Note that parking may be limited.

    The closest bus station to Van O Homestead is 162nd St/Hwy 6 & Wausau Ave. From there, it is approximately a 25-minute walk to the Homestead. Use the 364 or 348 bus lines to get to this station. From the bus stop, walk north on Wausau Ave, turn right onto 159th St, then turn right onto South Park Ave, and finally turn right onto 157th Pl. The Homestead will be on your right.

Built in 1870 by Peter Paarlberg for his wife, Cornelia Van Oostenbrugge, the house reflects the simple yet sturdy construction typical of pioneer homes. The foundation is made of rock from the nearby Thornton Quarry. The original structure consisted of a parlor, bedroom, and kitchen.In 1894, the house was expanded, and a summer kitchen was added in 1915. Today, descendants of the Paarlberg family still own and maintain the farm, cultivating soybeans and corn. While not regularly open for tours, the Homestead stands as a reminder of the area's rich agricultural heritage and the contributions of its early settlers.Visitors can appreciate the Homestead from the roadside, imagining the lives of those who toiled the land. The surrounding area, once dominated by farms, has gradually transformed into a suburban landscape, making the Van O Homestead a unique and valuable piece of local history.
