Discover more about Site of Old Fort Dearborn

The Site of Old Fort Dearborn marks the location of a United States fort constructed in 1803 on the south bank of the Chicago River. Named in honor of Henry Dearborn, then United States Secretary of War, the fort played a crucial role as the U.S. Army's westernmost outpost in the early 19th century. It was strategically important due to its location at the mouth of the Chicago River, a key portage area, especially after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The original fort was destroyed in 1812 during the Battle of Fort Dearborn, part of the War of 1812. The garrison and civilians were attacked by Potawatomi Indians as they evacuated the fort. A second Fort Dearborn was rebuilt on the same site in 1816. It served as a center for military activity during the Black Hawk War. The fort was eventually decommissioned and gradually dismantled, with the last vestiges disappearing after a fire in 1857. Today, the site is a Chicago Landmark, commemorated by bronze markers embedded in the sidewalk at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive. These markers outline the fort's original walls, offering visitors a tangible connection to Chicago's past. The fort's legacy is also represented by one of the four red stars on the Chicago flag, symbolizing its impact on the city's core and early growth.
