Prairie Street Brewing Co. is located in the heart of downtown Rockford, within the historic Prairie Street Brewhouse. This riverside landmark has been a cornerstone of the community for over a century. The building itself dates back to 1857 when Jonathan Peacock, an Englishman, constructed the space to house the Rockford Brewery. It's recognized as the oldest brewery in Illinois, withstanding the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that destroyed other breweries of the time. Originally known as Peacock Brewery, Jonathan Peacock invested $200 in the purchase of his home, where he would grind malt in a hand-milled coffee grinder, brew mash in a washtub, and deliver his brew to fellow Rockfordians in a wheelbarrow. At its peak, the original Rockford Brewing Company produced over 75,000 barrels a year. The building has served various purposes over the years, including an automated laundry facility and woodworking shop, before being revived as Prairie Street Brewing Company. Today, Prairie Street Brewing Co. offers a wide selection of handcrafted beers and a food menu that changes with the seasons, emphasizing fresh ingredients.
