Discover more about Rockford Morning Star Building

The Rockford Morning Star Building, situated at 127 N Wyman St, is a notable landmark in downtown Rockford, Illinois. Constructed between 1927 and 1928, the building was designed by the architecture firm Clausen, Kruse & Klein, blending Classical Revival and Art Deco styles. Its terra cotta exterior features pilasters with decorative capitals, while the entrance showcases Art Deco and Egyptian elements like chevrons and lotus buds. Originally, the building served as the headquarters for the Rockford Morning Star newspaper, a key source of information and community development in the city. The Rockford Morning Star, first published in 1888, merged with the Rockford Daily Register-Gazette in 1928. However, the Morning Star Building was only briefly used by the merged papers, as a new tower was constructed across the Rock River shortly after. In 1967, the Gannett Company acquired the paper and, in 1979, merged the remaining Rockford papers to form the Rockford Register Star. While the Rockford Morning Star Building no longer functions as a newspaper office, its legacy endures. It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1999 and is a contributing property to the West Downtown Rockford Historic District. Visitors can admire its architecture and explore the surrounding downtown area, which offers a variety of shops, cafes, and cultural attractions.
