Belvidere Mall: A Community Hub in Waukegan

Belvidere Mall, located on Belvidere Road in Waukegan, Illinois, holds a special place in the region's history as Lake County's first enclosed shopping mall, opening its doors on November 18, 1965. It was also among the first malls in the Chicago metropolitan area. Originally featuring 35 stores anchored by a Montgomery Ward department store, the mall thrived for several years.However, the opening of the larger Lakehurst Mall in 1971 presented a significant challenge. While Belvidere Mall faced decline, it adapted and reinvented itself to remain a vital part of the Waukegan community. A major renovation in 1998 led to its renaming as Belvidere Discount Mall, shifting its focus to smaller, family-owned businesses, many of which are Hispanic-owned or oriented.Today, Belvidere Mall offers a unique shopping experience, contrasting with larger commercial centers by hosting a mix of family-owned shops, minority-owned businesses, and long-standing local brands. While Home Depot currently serves as its main anchor store, the mall is known for its diverse range of services, including hair and nail salons, barber shops, tattoo and piercing studios, wireless service and repair, and tax preparation offices. The mall also features a variety of food options, from bakeries and churro stands to Mexican-style fast food.
