The Genesee Theatre, located in the heart of Waukegan, Illinois, is a testament to the city's rich history and commitment to the arts. Opened on Christmas Day in 1927, this opulent movie palace and vaudeville stage quickly became the premier entertainment venue on the North Shore. Conceived by A.L. Brumund, H.C. Burnett, and D.T. Webb, the Genesee was designed as a community center offering high-quality entertainment, commercial spaces, and even living spaces.The theater's architecture is a sight to behold. The exterior boasts an ornate design of terra cotta and pressed brick, while the interior showcases a Spanish Renaissance style with Caen stone and antique plaster décor. A grand lobby, complete with a massive chandelier, welcomes visitors. The auditorium features a large center dome fashioned from hammered silver, adding to the theater's lavishness.After experiencing economic decline and closure in 1989, the City of Waukegan purchased the Genesee in 1999 and undertook a massive $23 million renovation. Over 120 volunteers contributed to restoring the theater to its former glory. The Genesee Theatre reopened on December 3, 2004, and continues to thrive as a vibrant entertainment hub. Today, the Genesee Theatre hosts a wide array of events, including concerts, Broadway shows, comedy acts, and special events. With a seating capacity of over 2,400, the theater provides a dynamic and intimate setting for performances. The Genesee Theatre remains a symbol of hope, beauty, and community spirit in Waukegan.

Getting There
Public Transport
The Genesee Theatre is easily accessible via public transportation. From the Waukegan Metra station (Union Pacific/North Line), it's approximately a 9-minute walk. Upon exiting the station, head north on Spring Street, then turn right onto Washington Street. Continue east to Genesee Street, then turn left. The theater will be on your right. A one-way Metra fare from Chicago to Waukegan costs between $3-$8. Pace Transit also provides daily bus service to downtown Waukegan. Check Pacebus for schedules and pricing.
Walking
From downtown Waukegan, the Genesee Theatre is easily walkable. If you're near the Waukegan City Hall, head north on Genesee Street. The theater is located on the northeast corner of Genesee and Clayton Streets. The walk is generally flat and takes only a few minutes.
Driving
If driving, approach Waukegan via I-94 and exit onto IL-132 E/Grand Avenue heading east. Turn right onto North Genesee Street. The theater will be on your left, at the corner of Genesee and Clayton Streets. Street parking is available on Genesee Street and is free after 5:00 PM; before 5:00 PM, metered parking costs $0.50 per hour. Covered garage parking is available at Waukegan Lot C at 225 N County St for $10. Valet parking is often available for events, approaching from the east on Sheridan Road, for $15.

Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are readily available in Waukegan. A taxi from the Waukegan Metra station to the Genesee Theatre is a short ride, typically costing around $6-$10. Be sure to confirm the fare before starting your trip. The drop-off point is 203 N Genesee St, right in front of the theater.
