Lyons Woods Forest Preserve: A Natural Oasis

Lyons Woods Forest Preserve, a 345-acre gem in Waukegan, Illinois, offers a diverse landscape and a rich history. Named after Isaac Reed Lyons, an early settler from Massachusetts, the land has transformed over the years, from farmland to a haven for nature lovers.The preserve features 2.5 miles of gravel trails that wind through contrasting terrains, including pine groves, prairies, and oak woodlands. These trails connect to the McClory Trail, a regional path, and the Lyons Woods to Waukegan Savanna Trail, offering access to local parks and communities. Birdwatchers will delight in the diverse avian population, as Lyons Woods is part of the Lake Michigan flyway and home to various warblers and migratory species. An observation deck provides stunning views of the surrounding wildlife.Historically, the land has served various purposes. Philip Blanchard, a notable landowner, aided slaves on the Underground Railroad. In the early 20th century, part of the preserve was used as an airfield during World War I. Later, George and Eugenia Pavlik established an evergreen nursery, contributing to the unique pine grove found near the parking lot today.
