Lyons Woods Forest Preserve, a 345-acre gem in Waukegan, Illinois, offers a diverse landscape and a rich history. Named after Isaac Reed Lyons, an early settler from Massachusetts, the land has transformed over the years, from farmland to a haven for nature lovers.The preserve features 2.5 miles of gravel trails that wind through contrasting terrains, including pine groves, prairies, and oak woodlands. These trails connect to the McClory Trail, a regional path, and the Lyons Woods to Waukegan Savanna Trail, offering access to local parks and communities. Birdwatchers will delight in the diverse avian population, as Lyons Woods is part of the Lake Michigan flyway and home to various warblers and migratory species. An observation deck provides stunning views of the surrounding wildlife.Historically, the land has served various purposes. Philip Blanchard, a notable landowner, aided slaves on the Underground Railroad. In the early 20th century, part of the preserve was used as an airfield during World War I. Later, George and Eugenia Pavlik established an evergreen nursery, contributing to the unique pine grove found near the parking lot today. Visitors can explore the natural beauty and learn about the area's past through history panels installed throughout the preserve.

    Driving

    Lyons Woods Forest Preserve is located at 10200 Blanchard Rd, Waukegan, IL 60087. From Sheridan Road, turn west onto Blanchard Road. The entrance and parking lot are a short distance on the left. Parking is free and generally readily available.

    Biking

    접근 Lyons Woods via the Robert McClory Bike Path. Look for the marked connector trail approximately 6 miles from the start of the path. Follow the signs to enter the preserve. The bike path provides access to the preserve and connects to other regional trails.

    Public Transport

    Pace bus route 571 has a stop at the corner of Sheridan Road and Blanchard Road, directly adjacent to the entrance of Lyons Woods. From the bus stop, walk west on Blanchard Road a short distance to the entrance of the preserve. A single ride on Pace costs $1.75.
