Shahi Burj: Agra Fort's Royal Retreat

The Shahi Burj, also known as the Musamman Burj or Saman Burj, is a historically significant structure within the Agra Fort complex. This elegant, three-story octagonal tower was constructed by Emperor Shah Jahan, the same ruler who commissioned the Taj Mahal. Situated near the Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), it served as Shah Jahan's private working space and a place for quiet reflection.From the Shahi Burj, one can enjoy breathtaking views of the Taj Mahal across the Yamuna River. The tower's design showcases intricate Mughal architecture, featuring delicate marble inlay work and arched pavilions. The floor of the chamber is paved with marble to resemble a 'pachisi' board, a traditional Indian board game. Marble lattices with ornamental niches allowed royal ladies to observe the outside world unseen.Legend has it that Shah Jahan spent his final days imprisoned here by his son Aurangzeb, along with his daughter Jahanara Begum, gazing at his masterpiece, the Taj Mahal.
