Sikandra Fort: Akbar's Mausoleum

Sikandra Fort, also known as Akbar's Tomb, is situated in Sikandra, approximately 13 kilometers from Agra Fort. This historical site marks the final resting place of Emperor Akbar, one of the most influential Mughal rulers. Akbar himself initiated the planning and site selection for the tomb, reflecting a Turkic custom followed by the Mughals. His son, Jahangir, completed the construction in 1613, adding his own artistic touches. The fort complex spans 119 acres and is characterized by its red sandstone facade adorned with intricate carvings and inlaid white marble designs. The architecture represents a fusion of Hindu, Christian, Islamic, Jain, and Buddhist styles, embodying Akbar's vision of religious harmony. The main entrance is through the southern gateway, which features four white marble minarets. The complex is enclosed by high walls and features a Charbagh garden layout, divided into four equal quarters with waterways and fountains. The five-story pyramidal tomb houses the cenotaph of Akbar, with the actual tomb located in the basement. The walls are decorated with geometric, floral, and calligraphic designs, prefiguring the artistry seen in Itmad-ud-Daulah's Tomb. Visitors can also explore other structures within the complex, such as the Lodhi Tomb and Kanch Mahal. The serene gardens surrounding the tomb provide a peaceful atmosphere, making Sikandra Fort a significant historical and architectural landmark in Agra.
