Dhakri Ka Mahal: A Glimpse into Mughal History

Dhakri Ka Mahal, situated in the western suburbs of Agra, stands as a testament to the Mughal era. Believed to have been constructed between 1555 and 1605 AD, this monument is thought to be the final resting place of one of Emperor Akbar's wives, Bibi Ishwardi, as suggested by a Persian inscription.The Mahal, or mausoleum, is built entirely of red sandstone and features a square layout. The structure rests on a high platform and is adorned with five open entrances on each of its four sides. These entrances are constructed with lintels resting on stone pillar capitals, showcasing Mughal architectural features. The central chamber houses the grave of Bibi Ishwardi. The four corners of the structure are decorated with small cupolas built on octagonal bases supported by four stone pillars.While the cenotaph is missing, the monument still exudes a sense of historical significance. The roof of the ground floor features a kiosk built with pillars, and miniature kiosks of similar design adorn each corner. Once surrounded by four fountains connected by channels, these features were rediscovered after being hidden by soil. Dhakri Ka Mahal offers a serene escape for architecture lovers and history buffs.
