Discover more about Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal, meaning 'Crown of the Palaces' , is more than just a building; it's a symbol of love, wealth, power, and architectural brilliance. Emperor Shah Jahan built this exquisite mausoleum in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died during childbirth in 1631. Construction began in 1632 and took approximately 20 years to complete, employing thousands of workers. The Taj Mahal is the centerpiece of a sprawling 42-acre complex that includes a mosque, a guest house, formal gardens, and waterways. The mausoleum itself is a masterpiece of Mughal architecture, blending Persian, Islamic, and Indian styles. Its most striking feature is the large marble dome, surrounded by four smaller domes. The exterior is adorned with intricate carvings and pietra dura inlay using semi-precious stones. Inside, the tombs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal are housed in a relatively less decorated chamber. The surrounding gardens follow a traditional Persian charbagh design, divided into four sections by water channels, enhancing the symmetry and beauty of the complex. The Taj Mahal attracts millions of visitors every year and is a major tourist destination and a symbol of India.
