Mini Zoo Travel Guide

Established in 1967, the Mini Zoo in Port Blair is dedicated to preserving the unique and endemic animal species of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It offers a compact yet insightful experience into the region's diverse wildlife. Initially established to safeguard local species in a caged environment for recreational purposes, the zoo also acts as a miniature representation of the islands' broader ecological richness. While many animals were relocated to the Chidiyatapu Biological Park, the Mini Zoo still houses around 200 species, including the Andaman pig, Andaman gecko, white-bellied sea eagle, and Andaman serpent eagle. Many of these are classified as vulnerable.The zoo is known for its crocodile breeding program, where crocodiles are nurtured and later released into natural mangrove swamps. Visitors can also spot native birds such as Andaman pigeons and serpent eagles. The zoo is located on the premises of the Forest Museum, where you can find displays about the forest industry and wooden artworks. The zoo itself is adorned with padauk, rosewood and maple trees.While the zoo's facade is simple and its size is modest, it offers a peaceful retreat into nature. It's an ideal spot for families with children and those interested in birdwatching.
