Discover more about Dolphin's Nose Lighthouse

Dolphin's Nose Lighthouse, an iconic landmark in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India, sits atop Dolphin Hill, 358 feet above sea level. The rocky promontory, resembling a dolphin's snout, extends into the Bay of Bengal, offering breathtaking views. Originally built by the British in the 19th century to ensure safe passage for their ships, the lighthouse has evolved into a vital part of India's navigational network. The current lighthouse was constructed in the 1960s, replacing an older structure that was destroyed by a cyclone in 1876. Standing 19 meters tall, 173 meters above sea level, it is equipped with cyclone-tracking tools, and its light is visible up to 65 kilometers out to sea. Visitors can climb the spiral staircase to the observation deck for a panoramic vista of the city, sea, and surrounding landscape. The site also houses the Indian Navy’s Eastern Naval Command and the Visakhapatnam Port Trust’s signal station. The area around the lighthouse is well-maintained with gardens, offering a serene environment for relaxation and photography. Dolphin's Nose also holds historical significance as the site of the Battle of Vizagapatam in 1804 between the British and French. During World War II, it served as a strategic defense point with anti-aircraft batteries.
