    Discover more about Joshimath

Joshimath, or Jyotirmath, is a town in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India, holding significant religious and strategic importance. Situated at 6,150 feet (1,875 meters) above sea level in the Garhwal Himalayas, it serves as a crucial stopover for pilgrims heading to Badrinath and adventurers bound for Auli. Founded in the 8th century by Adi Guru Shankaracharya, Joshimath is one of the four cardinal pīthas (monasteries) he established, making it a vital center for Hindu learning and spiritual exploration. The town derives its name from Jyotirmath, the monastery established by Adi Shankaracharya. Legend says that Adi Guru meditated under a large Mulberry tree in the area, which is believed to be around 2400 years old. Joshimath is the winter seat of Lord Badri, whose idol is brought down from the Badrinath Temple to the Vasudeva temple during the colder months. The Narsingh Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Narsingh avatar, is another important religious site. Local mythology says that the idol's left hand is gradually thinning and that when it breaks, Lord Badrinath will move to Bhavishya Badri, about 10 km away. Beyond its religious importance, Joshimath is a base for trekking expeditions to the Valley of Flowers, Hemkund Sahib, and Kuari Pass. The Auli Ropeway, one of the longest in Asia, connects Joshimath to the popular skiing destination of Auli, offering panoramic views of the Himalayas. The town also provides stunning views of Hathi Parvat and Nanda Devi. Joshimath Cantonment is an important military station for the Indian Army, close to the Indo-Tibetan border. The town provides basic public services such as banks and petrol pumps.
