Himayat Bagh Biodiversity Heritage Site is a sprawling 17th-century garden that serves as a green oasis in the heart of Aurangabad. Once known as the Mughal Garden, this 300-acre complex was commissioned by Emperor Aurangzeb and designed as a fruit orchard. Today, it houses the Fruit Research Station and Nursery, a part of the Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth, offering visitors a unique blend of natural beauty and agricultural research. The garden is home to over 25,000 trees of various species, including over 300 varieties of mangoes, making it a paradise for fruit lovers. A study revealed the presence of 182 types of birds, 45 butterfly species, and diverse insects and reptiles. Visitors can explore well-maintained walking trails, observe various plant species, and enjoy the serene atmosphere. Historically, the garden also featured the Barra Darri, an ingenious structure with an underground water chamber that provided natural air conditioning. Although now inoperative, the system remains a testament to the engineering marvels of the past. Himayat Bagh is not only a tourist attraction but also a valuable educational resource, playing a vital role in preserving indigenous fruit varieties and promoting regional biodiversity.
