History of Jalna Road

From City Edge to Regional Road

Jalna Road developed as an eastward route from Aurangabad towards Jalna and the wider Marathwada region, linking the historic city with villages, agricultural land and later industrial areas. Its significance was primarily practical: it carried people, goods and long-distance traffic rather than forming an old bazaar street. As Aurangabad expanded beyond its traditional core, the road became an important spine for new housing, educational institutions, workshops and commercial premises. The corridor’s modern identity therefore belongs largely to the period of post-Independence urban growth, when roads east of the old city began to structure a much larger metropolitan footprint.

CIDCO and Planned New Aurangabad

The creation of planned residential districts by the City and Industrial Development Corporation, widely known as CIDCO, transformed the eastern side of Aurangabad. Sectors around the Jalna Road corridor were laid out with wider roads, housing blocks, civic facilities and commercial centres, offering an alternative to the older city’s denser fabric. This expansion brought schools, hospitals, public services and new employment areas into closer relationship with the regional road. Jalna Road consequently shifted from being an approach route to becoming a central urban address, with traffic generated by both local neighbourhoods and journeys across the wider city.

Industry, Airport and Urban Intensification

The growth of Chikalthana and the establishment of industrial and institutional activity east of the planned sectors gave Jalna Road an increasingly mixed character. The airport, located near Chikalthana, added another layer of importance, while commercial development introduced shopping centres, branded retail, restaurants and larger office and service premises. Flyovers and road improvements have responded to rising traffic, although the corridor remains shaped by congestion, broad crossings and frequent movement between local streets.
