Freedom Park: From Prison to Public Space

Freedom Park, located in the heart of Bengaluru, is a 21-acre site with a rich history. Originally established in 1866 by the British as the Central Jail, it housed freedom fighters and political prisoners. During the Emergency in 1975, prominent leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L.K. Advani were also imprisoned here. In 2008, the former jail was transformed into Freedom Park, serving as a tribute to India's freedom struggle. The park retains elements of the old jail, including watchtowers and barracks, offering visitors a glimpse into the past. The park also features a museum that showcases the history of the jail and the stories of the freedom fighters who were imprisoned there. Today, Freedom Park is a multifaceted space that serves as a recreational area, a historical site, and a venue for public gatherings and cultural events.
