The Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium in Bengaluru, named after India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, is dedicated to popularizing science and astronomy. Established in 1989 by the Bangalore City Corporation, and managed since 1992 by the Bangalore Association for Science Education (BASE), the planetarium has become a landmark in the city. The main attraction is the Sky Theatre, featuring a 15-meter hemispherical dome that simulates the night sky. Here, visitors can enjoy shows about our solar system, the universe, and the wonders of space exploration. The planetarium uses a hybrid projection system that combines traditional optomechanical projectors with modern digital projection to enhance the viewing experience. Shows are presented in both English and Kannada. Beyond the Sky Theatre, the planetarium also houses an exhibition hall with thematic displays related to the shows, as well as a Science Park with over 40 interactive exhibits that explain complex scientific concepts in an engaging way. Visitors can explore models such as resonant swings, whispering dishes, a sun dial, and a giant kaleidoscope. The planetarium also hosts special lectures and workshops on astronomical events, making it a valuable resource for students and teachers. The planetarium is typically open from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM, but is closed on Mondays and the second Tuesday of each month, as well as on local and national holidays.
