Discover more about Rani Gumpha

Rani Gumpha, meaning 'Queen's Cave', is the most extensive and celebrated cave within the Udayagiri and Khandagiri complex. Carved into the Udayagiri hills near Bhubaneswar, Odisha, this double-storied structure served as a Jain monastic retreat around the 1st century BCE. While not an architectural marvel, the cave boasts ancient and beautiful sculptures that reflect the artistic traditions of the time. The cave's design includes three wings on each floor, with the central wing being the largest and most elaborately carved. The lower floor has seven entrances in the middle wing, while the upper floor features nine columns. The upper portion of the central wing showcases relief images depicting a king's victory march. Other carvings depict scenes of wild animals, fruit-laden trees, human figures, women playing musical instruments, monkeys, and playful elephants. The pilasters feature toranas (arches) adorned with sculptures of Jain religious importance and royal scenes. Many of the cells within Rani Gumpha have 'dwara pala' images (door guardians), though some are disfigured. Despite damage and some lost details, Rani Gumpha remains a significant testament to ancient Indian rock-cut architecture and Jain artistic traditions. The cave's elevated location also provides stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
