Kanha Tiger Reserve: A Wildlife Haven

Kanha Tiger Reserve, situated in the Mandla and Balaghat districts of Madhya Pradesh, is one of India's most celebrated wildlife sanctuaries. Originally part of the Gondwanas, the 'land of the Gonds,' the area has a rich history intertwined with indigenous tribes. The park's journey from a reserve forest in 1879 to a wildlife sanctuary in 1933 and finally a national park in 1955 reflects a growing commitment to conservation. In 1973, it was designated a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, further solidifying its importance in tiger conservation. Covering 940 sq km, with a buffer zone expanding to 1,067 sq km, Kanha boasts diverse habitats, from highland and lowland areas to dense forests and open meadows. This varied terrain supports a thriving ecosystem with approximately 300 bird species, 43 mammal species, 26 reptile species, and over 500 insect species. The park is particularly known for its successful preservation of the barasingha, once on the brink of extinction, now flourishing as the 'jewel of Kanha'. Visitors can explore Kanha through jeep safaris, which are conducted in the mornings and afternoons across different zones, including Kisli, Mukki, Kanha, and Sarhi. Each zone offers unique landscapes and opportunities for wildlife sightings. The Kanha zone is considered a premium zone. The best time to visit is between October and June, with the most pleasant weather occurring between November and March. Kanha's commitment to conservation extends beyond its borders through the creation of corridors that support tigers and their prey. These efforts include measures to prevent human-wildlife conflict and reduce dependence on the forest, ensuring the long-term health of this invaluable ecosystem.
