Nagpur Narrow Gauge Rail Museum: A Journey Through India's Railway Heritage

The Narrow Gauge Rail Museum in Nagpur is a captivating tribute to India's rich railway heritage, particularly its narrow-gauge railway systems. Inaugurated on December 14, 2002, the museum preserves and presents the history of these railways, which once formed a vital part of the country's transportation network. Located on Kamptee Road in Moti Bagh, the museum spans 4.5 to 5.6 acres and houses a diverse collection of artifacts. Visitors can explore vintage narrow-gauge steam and diesel locomotives, historic passenger coaches, freight wagons, and signaling equipment. The museum also features thematic galleries with models, photographs, and other visual displays that illustrate the functioning of various railway departments. Among the notable exhibits are a 1916 Bagnall steam locomotive, a wooden-bodied Royal Carriage built in 1899, and a ZDM2RA class diesel locomotive from 1964. The Heritage Gallery displays German-silver cutlery used in royal carriages, a coal-fired oven, and a collection of postage stamps on Indian and foreign railways. The museum offers an amusement park with slides and swings, a toy train ride called the 'Orange City Express' that circles the museum's perimeter, and a revolving restaurant on wheels. The museum is not just a display of railway artifacts but also a place for families and children to learn about the history and significance of narrow-gauge railways in India.
