    Discover more about Shaheed Smarak

Shaheed Smarak, a historic and monumental circular building in Jabalpur, stands as a tribute to the heroes of India's freedom movement. Situated in what was once known as Gole-Bazar during British times and later as Wright Town, the Smarak is renowned for its stunning frescoes. These murals, created by the internationally acclaimed artist Beohar Rammanohar Sinha and his colleagues from Santiniketan, adorn the walls, balcony, parapet, and dome of the structure. The central theme of the frescoes is India's war of independence fought between the 16th and 19th centuries. The paintings depict key events and figures, starting with Rani Durgavati's resistance against Mughal Emperor Akbar's attack on Gondwana, which encompasses present-day Jabalpur and Mandla. Notably, the painting of Rani Durgavati is the first one ever made. The construction of Shaheed Smarak was conceived by Seth Govind Dasji to commemorate the freedom movement. The foundation stone was laid on October 28, 1948, by the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, and it was inaugurated on April 26, 1956, by the then Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The original idea was to create an auditorium resembling a miniaturized version of Delhi's Parliament House, featuring a central hall, a surrounding corridor, and rooms for art, cultural activities, an art gallery, and a library. Today, Shaheed Smarak is managed by a Public Trust and continues to be a significant landmark in Jabalpur. Visitors can explore the well-maintained grounds, admire the intricate carvings and memorial tower, and reflect on the sacrifices made for the nation's freedom. The site also hosts cultural activities and events throughout the year, serving as a community gathering place.
