Discover more about Shri Ganesh Mandir Tekdi

Shri Ganesh Mandir Tekdi, one of Nagpur's most famous and popular temples, holds a special place in the hearts of devotees and tourists alike. Perched atop a small hill, the temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the harbinger of prosperity. The temple's name, Tekdi Ganapati, is derived from the Marathi word for hill, as it is constructed on one. Believed to be approximately 250 years old, the temple's origins trace back to the Bhonsle dynasty's reign in Nagpur. Legend has it that the idol of Lord Ganesha was discovered buried on the hill and subsequently enshrined by locals. Starting as a modest shrine with a simple tin shade and platform, the temple has evolved into a grand spiritual center over time. Significant improvements began in the 1970s, with the Military Defense taking possession and arranging for the temple trust to acquire the adjoining land. Generous contributions from devotees facilitated the construction of the present-day temple, completed in 1984. Further expansion occurred in 1995, adding 20,000 square feet to the premises. The idol itself is considered self-existent and is said to have grown in size over time. It features golden decorations on the forehead and silver ornaments, with a special display of the Mukut (diadem) on Chaturthi and Ekadashi. The temple is regarded as a Jagruta Devasthan (awake deity), drawing crowds from early morning until late at night. The temple's architecture showcases traditional design elements with intricate carvings and statues. Located near the Nagpur railway station, the temple is easily accessible. However, parking can be challenging, especially during festivals, due to its central location and increasing visitor numbers. Despite parking limitations, Shri Ganesh Mandir Tekdi remains a significant spiritual and historical landmark in Nagpur.
