Discover more about Shri Ashtalakshmi Temple

The Shri Ashtalakshmi Temple, situated on the shores of the Bay of Bengal in Besant Nagar, Chennai, is a captivating temple dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and her eight manifestations. These eight forms, known as the Ashtalakshmi, represent different aspects of wealth: offspring, success, prosperity, courage, bravery, food, and knowledge. The temple is a significant pilgrimage and tourist destination, drawing visitors with its spiritual ambiance and unique architecture. The temple's construction began in 1974, guided by Sri Mukkur Lakshmi Narasimhachariyar, and was completed in 1976. Sri Chandrashekarendra Saraswati Swamigal of Kanchi Mutt had wished for the temple to be built. The design is inspired by the Sundhararaja Perumal Temple in Uthiramerur and blends ancient Dravidian architectural elements with contemporary style. The temple is designed in the shape of 'AUM', the first Vedic Mantra, Pranava. The temple's multi-tiered structure houses separate sanctums for each of the Ashtalakshmi goddesses. This arrangement allows devotees to visit all the shrines without stepping over any sanctum. The main shrine, located on the second level, features Lakshmi and her consort Vishnu facing the Bay of Bengal. The temple also houses shrines for the Dashavatars (avatars of Vishnu). The architecture incorporates the Ashtanga Vimana style, an ancient construction method, with three forms of Vishnu (standing, sitting, and reclining) depicted on each floor. From the temple, one can enjoy a marvelous view of the Bay of Bengal. The sound of the waves reverberates, creating a divine atmosphere.
