Taxi fares from Raipur to Barnawapara range from ₹2,500 to ₹3,500. Alternatively, travel to Mahasamund by train, which is around 60 km from the sanctuary. From Mahasamund, hire a taxi or use local transport to reach Barnawapara. A shared auto or local bus from Mahasamund station can be a budget-friendly option. Expect to pay between ₹1,500-₹2,500 for a taxi from Mahasamund to the sanctuary.

    Once at Barnawapara, pre-booked safaris are the primary way to explore the sanctuary. Safari charges for a 30 km ride in a Gypsy vehicle (typically seating eight) range from ₹1,300 to ₹2,800. A guide is mandatory and costs an additional ₹250. Entry fees are ₹55 per person for Indian tourists and ₹200 per person for foreign tourists. Remember that safari bookings are best made in advance through resorts or tour operators.

Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1976, is a significant ecotourism hotspot in central India. Named after the Bar and Nawapara forest villages nestled within its boundaries, the sanctuary spans approximately 245 square kilometers in the northeastern corner of the Raipur district. The landscape is characterized by undulating terrain dotted with low and high hillocks, well-stocked with forests. The sanctuary's biodiversity is supported by tributaries of the Mahanadi River, with the Balamdehi River forming its western boundary and the Jonk River defining its northeastern edge. The forests are classified as teak, sal, and mixed forests, providing a diverse habitat for a wide array of flora and fauna. Commonly sighted animals include the Indian bison (Gaur), Cheetal, Sambhar, Neelgai, and Wild boar. The sanctuary also boasts over 150 species of birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Other animals that can be found here are tigers, leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, jackals, four-horned antelopes, chinkara, black buck, jungle cat, barking deer, porcupine, monkey, bison, striped hyena, cobra, and pythons. The ideal time to visit Barnawapara is between October and March when the weather is pleasant and wildlife sightings are more frequent. The sanctuary remains closed from July 1st to October 31st due to the monsoon season.
