Doddabetta Peak, meaning 'Big Mountain' in the local Badugu language, is the highest point in the Nilgiri Hills, soaring to 2,637 meters (8,652 feet). Situated 9 km from Ooty on the Ooty-Kotagiri Road, it marks the meeting point of the Western and Eastern Ghats. The peak offers stunning 360-degree views of the Nilgiri landscape, including valleys, forests, and distant plains; on a clear day, you might even spot Coimbatore and Mysore. The slopes are covered in dense shola thickets, rhododendron trees, and a variety of herbs. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) maintains a telescope house with two telescopes, allowing visitors to get a closer look at the scenery. Doddabetta is a haven for trekkers, with trails winding through the lush greenery. The peak has been a sacred site for indigenous tribes like the Todas and Badagas for centuries. In the 19th century, the British explored the peak, establishing a military camp and meteorological observatory. Today, Doddabetta Peak balances tourism and environmental conservation, remaining a must-visit destination in Ooty.
