Thirumuruganatha Swamy Temple: A Sacred Shiva Abode

Thirumuruganatha Swamy Temple, an ancient Shiva Sthalam in Thirumurugan Poondi, stands as a testament to faith and architectural brilliance. The temple's origins are steeped in mythology, with legends recounting Lord Murugan's worship of Lord Shiva to atone for the sin of killing the demon Soorapadman. This act led to the temple being named after him, signifying its unique connection to both deities. The temple's Dravidian architecture showcases intricate carvings on its gopurams and pillars, reflecting the craftsmanship of the Chola, Vijayanagara, and Nayak dynasties who contributed to its expansion and renovation. The absence of a traditional eastern gopuram is compensated by a Nandi statue in a mandapam at the front of the temple, a characteristic feature of Kongu Nadu Shiva temples. Inside, the presiding deity, Thirumuruganathar Swamy, appears as a Swayambumurthi in the form of a Shivalinga, facing west. His divine consort, Sri Muyangu Poonmulai Valliammai, has a separate shrine. The temple is also known for the sculptures depicting the story of Sundarar, a revered Saivite saint, who regained his lost possessions with the Lord's grace. The temple celebrates several festivals, including the 13-day Brahmotsavam in the Tamil month of Maasi (February-March), Maha Shivrathri, and Skanda Sashti. The temple is under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India. Devotees believe that worshiping here can relieve mental diseases, curses, and sins. The temple's sacred tanks, including the Shanmuga Theertham, are believed to grant child boons. The temple is a Parihara Sthalam for Ketu Dosham and Brahmahathi Dosham.
