Established in 1958, the institute was founded by the King of Sikkim, Tashi Namgyal, with the vision of preserving and promoting the rich heritage of the Tibetan cultural area. The foundation stone was laid by the 14th Dalai Lama in 1957, and the institute was inaugurated by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1958.The NIT's main building is a splendid example of Sikkimese architecture, reflecting traditional Tibetan designs. The institute houses a museum, a Tibetan library, and a research center. The museum showcases a remarkable collection of Mahayana Buddhist art, including thangkas (painted scrolls), statues, ritual objects, and rare Buddhist texts in various languages. The library boasts over 60,000 volumes, including translations of original Buddhist teachings, scholarly articles, and xylographs.The institute's collection includes a silver statue of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of knowledge, and relics of Asokan missionaries. Visitors can explore exhibits of coins, Tibetan clothing, and other artifacts, gaining insights into Tibetan art, culture, and language.
