Raneh Falls: India's Geological Grandeur

Raneh Falls, a hidden gem near Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, presents a breathtaking spectacle of nature's artistry. Formed by the Ken River, also known as the Karnavati River, the falls feature a 5-km long canyon of pure crystalline granite in pink, red, and grey shades. Often referred to as the 'Grand Canyon of India', the canyon plunges up to 30 meters, creating a series of magnificent waterfalls. What sets Raneh Falls apart is its unique geological history. The canyon's formation is attributed to volcanic activity millions of years ago, resulting in a landscape rich in granite and dolomite. Visitors can observe five distinct rock types, a rare phenomenon in Asia. The falls are located within the Panna Forest Reserve, adding to the natural beauty. The best time to visit is during the monsoon season (July-September) when the landscape transforms with numerous seasonal waterfalls. The period from September to November is also ideal as the water level decreases, unveiling the canyon's splendor. Besides the falls, the nearby Ken Gharial Sanctuary, at the Ken and Khudar Rivers' confluence, is home to rare Gharial reptiles. Panna National Park, about 25 km away, offers wildlife safaris.
