Located 23 kilometers from Gangtok, the monastery is perched on a hill, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Originally founded in the 16th century by the 9th Karmapa, Wangchuk Dorje, the monastery was rebuilt in the 1960s by the 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, after fleeing Tibet. The monastery was designed as a replica of the original Tsurphu Monastery in Tibet. Rumtek Monastery serves as the international headquarters of the Karma Kagyu lineage, one of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. The complex includes a stunning shrine temple meant to spread Buddha's teachings, living quarters for monks, and the Karma Sri Nalanda Institute for Buddhist Studies. The main prayer hall, known as the Golden Stupa, houses ancient manuscripts, sacred relics, and some of the world's rarest Buddhist art objects. Visitors can witness prayer ceremonies, explore the monastic complex, and participate in meditation sessions. The monastery is a four-story structure adorned with murals and intricate paintings of deities. Long silk banners and ancient thangkas decorate the main shrine, which also houses a ten-foot-high statue of Sakyamuni. The top floor of an adjacent building features a small altar with a golden stupa containing the relics of the 16th Karmapa Lama. The monastery also houses an aviary, a school, several stupas, and a retreat for monks.
