The Adil Shahi dynasty was known for its cultural and architectural contributions, and this gateway is a testament to their legacy. In 1510, the Portuguese seized Goa and transformed the palace into a residence for their Governors. The new Viceroy would stay here, awaiting the ceremonial keys to the city of Old Goa from the departing Viceroy. The palace also played a crucial role during festive occasions, reflecting the vibrant cultural life of Goa during the Portuguese era. The Portuguese called the palace “Idalcaon Palace”.During the 17th century, an epidemic forced the abandonment of the palace. The gateway showcases a blend of Indo-Islamic architecture with intricate carvings and elegant arches.
