Discover more about Arvalem Caves

The Arvalem Caves, also known as Pandava Caves, are an ancient historical site located near Sanquelim, Goa, dating back to around the 6th century. Carved from laterite stone, the caves consist of five distinct chambers and are believed to have either Buddhist or Hindu origins. Historians debate their purpose, with some suggesting they were used by Buddhist monks as meditation chambers, while others connect them to Hindu mythology, speculating that the Pandavas from the Mahabharata may have stayed here during their exile. The caves feature simple yet intriguing laterite stone chambers. The interior contains carved niches and remnants of early inscriptions, hinting at their use for meditation or as a refuge. The central chamber is the largest and features a linga, holding religious significance. The shafts of the four crafted lingas are very similar to those that can be found in Elephanta, Ajanta and Ellora caves in Maharashtra. The Shivalinga in the second cave is engraved with an inscription written in Sanskrit and Brahmi characters of the 7th century. Located near Bicholim in North Goa, the caves are easily accessible by car or taxi from Mapusa and Panjim. The site offers a unique historical experience, with inscriptions and simple carvings that provide insight into Goa's ancient past. Adjacent to the caves is the picturesque Arvalem Waterfall, a 50-meter-high waterfall that flows down into a refreshing pool surrounded by dense greenery. The waterfall is particularly vibrant during the monsoon season, making it a popular spot for visitors seeking natural beauty alongside historical exploration. The nearby Rudreshwar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a significant spot for both tourists and devotees.
