The basilica is renowned for housing the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier, a co-founder of the Society of Jesus, whose relics draw pilgrims and tourists alike.Construction of the basilica began in 1594 and was funded by legacies left by Dom Jeronimo Mascarenhas, a Portuguese Captain of Cochin. The facade, made of black granite, showcases a blend of Doric, Corinthian, and Composite architectural styles. Unlike other churches in Goa, the Basilica of Bom Jesus is not plastered on the outside, giving it a unique and austere appearance.Inside, the basilica is rich in art and history. The main altar features a large statue of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, with a small image of Bom Jesus (Infant Jesus) below. The interiors are adorned in the Mosaico-Corinthian style, with intricate carvings, gilded altars, and beautiful paintings depicting scenes from the life of St. Francis Xavier. The mausoleum of St. Francis Xavier, a gift from Cosimo III, Grand Duke of Tuscany, is a masterpiece designed by the Florentine sculptor Giovanni Battista Foggini. The silver casket containing the relics is displayed every ten years, attracting devotees from around the world.The Basilica also holds an art gallery on the upper level, showcasing works of Goan surrealist painter Dom Martin, providing insights into the artwork of that time.
