Getting There

Ferry

The primary access to Chorão Island is via ferry from Ribandar, approximately 5 km from Panaji. From Panaji, taxis and buses are readily available to Ribandar. The ferry ride itself is short, lasting about 15-20 minutes. Pedestrians and two-wheeler riders can board the ferry free of charge. Four-wheelers are charged a minimal fee of ₹10.
Public Transport

From Panaji Bus Station, take a local bus to Ribandar. The bus journey takes approximately 30 minutes. From Thivim Railway Station, which is about 25 kilometers from Panaji, you can take a local bus or hire a taxi to reach Panjim. The bus journey takes around 45 minutes and costs approximately ₹20-50. A taxi ride takes about 30-40 minutes and costs around ₹500-700.

Chorão Island, located on the Mandovi River, is the largest of Goa's 17 islands, offering a tranquil retreat from the state's lively beaches. Just a short ferry ride from Ribandar, it presents a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Originally known as Chudamani, meaning 'stunning precious stone' in Sanskrit, the island's history dates back to the 3rd and 4th centuries AD with the arrival of Indo-Aryans. The Portuguese colonized the island from 1510 to 1961, calling it 'Ilha dos Fidalgos' (Island of Noblemen), and their influence remains visible in the architecture and culture.
