Institute Menezes Braganza: A Cultural Hub in Panaji

The Institute Menezes Braganza stands as a testament to Goa's rich cultural heritage. Established in 1871 by the Portuguese government as the Institute Vasco da Gama, it was later renamed to honor Luís de Menezes Bragança, a Goan journalist and activist who campaigned against colonial rule. The institute's primary focus is to promote activities in the fields of language, literature, art, and culture in Goa. It serves as a platform for local talent and collaborates with various organizations to host literary festivals, conferences, art workshops, exhibitions, and competitions. The building itself is a blend of architectural styles, reflecting Goa's Portuguese past. Inside, visitors can admire the grand staircase and the azulejos (glazed colored tiles) that depict scenes from Luís Vaz de Camões' epic poem, Os Lusíadas. The Panaji Central Library, one of India's oldest libraries, is located within the institute. The library houses a vast collection of books, paintings, drawings, sculptures, coins, stamps and artifacts.
