The Mae De Deus Church, meaning Mother of God, is an iconic landmark in Saligao, North Goa. Constructed in 1873, it stands as one of the finest examples of Neo-Gothic architecture in Goa. The church's construction resulted from the local Catholic community's desire to have their own parish. The church's architecture is characterized by its pristine white walls, pointed arches, and towering spires, reminiscent of a fairytale castle. The main portal is almost a full story high, with a domed shape and a statue of Our Lady in a niche above. Inside, the church is adorned with gilded and carved ornamentation, including six sub-altars dedicated to various saints. The main altar houses the miraculous statue of Mae de Deus, brought from the ruins of the Mae de Deus convent in Daujim, Old Goa. At night, the church is beautifully illuminated, enhancing its ethereal beauty. The courtyard features another statue of Mae de Deus, made of black stone. The annual Church feast, celebrating Our Lady, is held on the first Sunday of May, featuring a grand procession and fireworks. Mass timings are held daily.
