Margao Municipal Garden, a landmark in the center of Madgaon, is a popular spot for both locals and tourists seeking a tranquil retreat. Also known as Praca Jorge Barreto, the garden is surrounded by important buildings like the Municipal Council and is a green oasis in the city.
The garden's history dates back to before Goa's liberation when the northern segment was developed by the Mavany family and named after Aga Khan. In 1959, it was inaugurated by Goa's last Portuguese Governor-General, Vassalo e Silva. Today, the entire garden is municipal property, maintained by the Margao Municipal Council. A statue of Luís de Menezes Bragança, an Indo-Portuguese writer and anti-colonial activist, stands within the garden.

From the Margao Municipal Council building, walk across the street to the Margao Municipal Garden. The garden is located in the heart of the city, opposite the Municipal building. It is easily accessible on foot from most central locations in Margao.
Public Transport
If arriving by bus at the Margao Bus Stand, the garden is a short walk away. Exit the bus stand and walk towards the Municipal Council building; the garden is located directly opposite. Local buses are available from various parts of Goa to Margao Bus Stand. Bus fares typically range from ₹30-₹60.
Taxi/Ride-share
Taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available in Madgaon. From the Madgaon Railway Station, a taxi to the Municipal Garden will cost approximately ₹150-₹250, depending on traffic and time of day. The journey takes around 10-15 minutes.
