Discover more about Shree Mangueshi Temple

The Shree Mangueshi Temple, located in Mangeshi Village, Priol, stands as a testament to Goa's rich cultural and religious heritage. Dedicated to Lord Manguesh, an incarnation of Lord Shiva, the temple attracts devotees and tourists alike with its serene ambiance and unique architecture. The temple's origins trace back to Kushasthali (Cortalim) in the 16th century. To protect the deity from Portuguese persecution, the idol was moved to its present location in Mangeshi, which was then under the rule of the Hindu-friendly Adil Shahi dynasty. The temple's architecture is a blend of traditional Hindu and Portuguese styles, featuring white towers, domes, pilasters, and balustrades. A prominent Nandi Bull, the vehicle of Shiva, is a notable feature. The seven-story deepstambha (lamp tower) is particularly striking when illuminated during festivals. The temple complex includes a spacious courtyard, a water tank considered to be one of the oldest parts of the temple, and halls for gatherings. The temple is known for its vibrant celebrations and festivals, including Rama Navami, Akshaya Tritiya, Navaratri, Dussera, Diwali, and Mahashivratri. The Magha Poornima Festival (Jatrotsav) is a grand event that attracts thousands of devotees. During festivals, the deity is adorned and taken around the streets in a chariot pulled by devotees. Daily rituals include Shodshopchar pujas, Maha-Aarti, and Panchopchar pooja. Every Monday, a procession of the idol of Manguesh in a Palakhi takes place with music before the evening Aarti. Visitors are expected to dress modestly, and photography inside the main temple complex may be restricted. The temple is open daily, with specific timings for darshan and aartis.
