Nestled in the foothills of Kavalem village in Ponda Taluka, South Goa, the Shree Shantadurga Temple is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Goddess Shantadurga, a manifestation of Goddess Durga who is believed to mediate between Lord Vishnu and Shiva. The temple's history dates back to the 16th century when the original temple was located in Keloshi, Salcette. Due to religious persecution by the Portuguese, the temple was moved to its present location in Kavlem. The current structure was built between 1713 and 1738 during the reign of Maratha ruler Chattrapati Shahu Maharaj. The temple's architecture is a unique blend of Indian and Portuguese styles. The bright white exterior with blue highlights contrasts beautifully with the surrounding greenery. The main building features pyramidal roofs, a decorative brass final, and Roman-arched windows, some with stained-glass panes. Inside, intricate carvings, exquisite chandeliers, and graceful pillars adorn the sabha mandap (assembly hall). The sanctum sanctorum houses the idol of Goddess Shantadurga, flanked by Goddess Laxmi and Goddess Saraswati. The temple complex includes a large tank, a Deep Jyoti Stambh (light tower), and agrashalas (guest houses). A mandap is available for conducting traditional Hindu marriage rituals and other ceremonies. The temple also has a canteen serving vegetarian meals and an accommodation complex for devotees. Shree Shantadurga Temple is not only a place of worship but also a center for cultural and religious activities. The temple celebrates several festivals throughout the year, including the annual Shantadurga Jatra (festival) in December/January, Navratri, and Dussehra. These festivals feature religious processions, traditional music, dance performances, and vibrant cultural activities. Visitors are advised to dress modestly and be mindful of temple customs and rituals. Photography may be restricted in certain areas, so it's always best to ask for permission. The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 8:30 PM, with no entrance fee.
