St. Sebastian's Chapel: A Beacon of Faith in Fontainhas

Nestled in the heart of Fontainhas, the Latin Quarter of Panaji, Goa, St. Sebastian's Chapel is a captivating landmark that embodies the region's rich history and cultural heritage. Built in 1818, the chapel is dedicated to St. Sebastian, who was invoked for protection against plagues and pestilence. The chapel's simple yet elegant whitewashed facade stands out amidst the colorful Portuguese-style houses that line the narrow, winding streets of Fontainhas. Inside, the chapel features a small nave, an adjoining corridor leading to the choir room, and a serene ambiance that invites reflection and prayer. One of the chapel's most remarkable features is the striking crucifix of Jesus with his eyes open. This unique crucifix, originally located in the Palace of the Inquisition in Old Goa, is said to possess magical powers, rewarding the good and punishing troublemakers. The chapel also houses a statue of the Virgin Mary, two marquetry chests, and three elaborately carved screens from a church in Diu, showcasing the cultural connections of the region. The square in front of the chapel is a gathering place for the local community, especially during the annual Feast of Our Lady of Livrament in mid-November. A century-old well, still filled with water, is attached to the chapel, adding to its historical significance.
