Gir National Park: Last Refuge of the Asiatic Lion

Gir National Park, located in Gujarat, India, is a crucial wildlife sanctuary and the last refuge of the Asiatic lion. Once a private hunting ground, the area faced a severe decline in the lion population due to hunting in the 19th century. Conservation efforts, initiated by the Nawab of Junagadh and later supported by the Indian government, led to the establishment of the sanctuary in 1965. Today, Gir National Park is a thriving ecosystem with a rich biodiversity. The park's landscape includes rugged ridges, plateaus, valleys, and isolated hills, supporting a diverse range of flora and fauna. The park is predominated by dry deciduous forests, interspersed with semi-evergreen trees, grasslands and rocky slopes. Over 400 plant species have been recorded here. Besides the Asiatic lion, Gir is home to a variety of other mammals, including leopards, hyenas, sambar deer, chital, nilgai, and chowsingha. Reptiles such as crocodiles, snakes, tortoises, and monitor lizards can also be found within the park. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the over 300 species of birds that call Gir home. Visitors can explore Gir National Park through jeep safaris, which offer the opportunity to spot lions and other wildlife in their natural habitat. The Gir Interpretation Zone at Devalia provides a guaranteed sighting of lions and other Gir wildlife in a fenced-off area. The park is typically open from mid-October to mid-June, with safaris available in the morning and afternoon. Booking safaris in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak season.
