Discover more about Kutch Museum

The Kutch Museum, situated in Bhuj, Gujarat, stands as a testament to the region's vibrant past and diverse cultural traditions. Founded in 1877 by Maharao Khengarji III, it began as a School of Arts before evolving into a museum to showcase the wedding gifts of the Maharao. Initially known as the Fergusson Museum, named after Sir James Fergusson, the Governor of Bombay, who laid the foundation stone in 1884, the museum's current structure reflects an Italian Gothic architectural style. Inside, eleven galleries present a wide array of exhibits, including a picture gallery, an anthropological section, an archaeological section, and sections dedicated to textiles, weapons, musical instruments, shipping, and even stuffed animals. One section is devoted to the tribal cultures of Kutch, displaying ancient artifacts, folk arts, and crafts that offer insights into the lives and traditions of the region's tribal communities. The museum houses the largest existing collection of Kshatrapa inscriptions, dating back to the 1st century AD, along with examples of the extinct Kutchi script and a fascinating collection of coins, including the Kori, Kutch's local currency until 1948. A highlight of the museum is the 'Airavat,' a seven-trunked, snow-white wooden elephant, an 18th-century masterpiece from Mandvi, adorned with floral designs in the Kamagiri style. The Airavat was featured on an Indian postal stamp in 1978. The Kutch Museum not only preserves historical artifacts but also serves as a window into the cultural identity of Kutch, bridging the past and present for visitors.
