Car
If you're traveling by car, the main access point to Periyar National Park is through the town of Thekkady. From Kochi, take NH 183 towards Kottayam, and then continue on NH 183A to reach Thekkady. The total journey is approximately 160 km and will take around 4-5 hours depending on traffic. Once you reach Thekkady, follow the signs to Periyar National Park, which is about 4 km from the town center. Ensure to check the road conditions, especially during the monsoon season.
Public Transportation (Bus)
For those using public transportation, you can board a bus from major cities like Kochi or Kottayam to Thekkady. Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) operates regular services. The bus journey from Kochi to Thekkady takes about 5-6 hours. Once you arrive at Thekkady bus station, you can hire a taxi or auto-rickshaw to reach the park entrance, which is about 4 km away. Expect to pay around ₹100-₹200 for the auto-rickshaw.
Train and Taxi
If you prefer traveling by train, the nearest railway station to Periyar National Park is Kottayam. From Kottayam, you can take a taxi or a local bus to Thekkady, which is approximately 110 km away. The taxi ride will take around 3 hours and cost around ₹2,500-₹3,000. Buses are available but may take longer, so plan accordingly. Upon reaching Thekkady, follow the local signs to Periyar National Park.
