Car
If you are driving from Leh, take the Leh-Nubra Valley road (also known as the Khardung La road). The drive takes approximately 4-5 hours, covering about 120 kilometers. You will pass through the scenic Khardung La Pass, which is one of the highest motorable roads in the world. After descending from the pass, continue towards Diskit, the main town in Nubra Valley. From Diskit, head towards the Khalsar Sand Dunes, located about 30 kilometers away. Ensure to follow the signs towards Khalsar village, and the dunes will be easily visible as you approach the area.
Public Transportation (Shared Taxi)
From Leh, you can take a shared taxi to Nubra Valley. These taxis are available at the Leh taxi stand and usually operate early in the morning. The cost is approximately INR 600-800 per person for the journey. After reaching Diskit, you can hire a local taxi to take you to Khalsar Sand Dunes, which will cost about INR 500-700 one way. The total travel time is around 6-7 hours depending on the stops and road conditions.
Public Bus
For a more budget-friendly option, you can take a public bus from Leh to Diskit. Buses typically leave in the morning and the fare is around INR 300-400. The journey takes about 6-8 hours. Once you arrive in Diskit, you can find shared taxis or private taxis that will take you to Khalsar Sand Dunes for approximately INR 500-700. Make sure to check the bus schedule in advance as they may not run daily.
