Travel Guide to Nubra Valley Sand Dunes

Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving from Leh, head north on NH 1 towards Khardung La Pass. The journey will take approximately 2-3 hours, depending on road conditions. Once you reach the top of Khardung La, enjoy the breathtaking views before continuing down the other side. After descending, follow the signs for Nubra Valley, which will lead you through scenic landscapes until you reach Diskit, the main town in Nubra Valley. From Diskit, follow the road signs towards the Nubra Valley Sand Dunes, located near Hunder, which is about 7 km away. The sand dunes are easily accessible from the main road.

• Public Transportation

  To use public transportation from Leh to Nubra Valley, you can take a shared taxi or bus from Leh's main market. Shared taxis usually leave when full, while buses have a fixed schedule. The journey to Diskit takes about 5-6 hours. Once in Diskit, you can hire a local taxi to reach the Nubra Valley Sand Dunes, which is approximately 7 km from Diskit. Make sure to confirm the fare with the driver beforehand, and expect to pay around INR 200-300 for the short ride.

• Bike Rental

  For the more adventurous traveler, renting a bike in Leh is a popular option. Many rental shops offer bikes at reasonable rates. From Leh, ride north towards Khardung La Pass, which is a thrilling journey. After crossing the pass, head down towards Nubra Valley. The ride will take approximately 3-4 hours. Once you reach Diskit, continue to Hunder to find the sand dunes. Ensure you have a valid license and wear a helmet at all times. Rental costs vary but expect to pay around INR 800-1500 per day, depending on the bike type.
