Discovering Chang La Pass: A Gateway to the Himalayas

Getting There

• Car

  To reach Chang La Pass from Leh, start by driving east on the Leh-Manali Highway (NH3). The distance is approximately 135 km and takes about 4-5 hours. You'll pass through the scenic villages of Thiksey and Shey, and the stunning landscapes of the Indus Valley. After reaching Sakti village, take a right turn towards Chang La Pass, following the signs. The road will lead you up to the pass, which is at an elevation of 5,360 meters. Ensure your vehicle is in good condition and carry extra fuel, as there are limited fuel stations along the way.

• Public Transportation (Shared Taxi)

  If you're not driving, you can take a shared taxi from the taxi stand in Leh. Look for taxis heading towards Pangong Lake or Nubra Valley, as they often pass through Chang La Pass. The fare is generally around INR 600-800 per person, and the journey takes about 5-6 hours. Ensure to book your spot early, as these taxis can fill up quickly, especially during peak tourist seasons.

• Public Transportation (Bus)

  Another option is to take a bus from Leh to Pangong Lake, which will pass through Chang La Pass. The Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) operates these buses. The fare is approximately INR 300-400. Buses usually depart early in the morning from the Leh bus station, so arrive at least 30 minutes early to secure your seat. The entire journey will take about 6-7 hours, offering breathtaking views along the way.

• Bicycle

  For the adventurous, cycling to Chang La Pass is an option. You can rent a bicycle in Leh and follow the same route as vehicles. Be cautious of the altitude and ensure you acclimatize properly before attempting the ride. The journey is challenging and requires a good level of fitness, taking approximately 8-10 hours one way. Carry sufficient water and snacks, as facilities are limited along the route.
